Getting Started
Welcome to Miles!
Miles helps you track your vehicle's fuel consumption, mileage, and costs. Whether you drive a fuel-powered car or an electric vehicle, Miles provides detailed statistics and insights into your vehicle's efficiency.
First Time Setup
- Open the app and tap the Settings tab at the bottom
- Tap Vehicles and then the + button to add your first vehicle
- Enter your vehicle's name and select the type (Fuel or Electric)
- Set your preferred currency and units in Settings
- Start adding fuel-ups or charging sessions from the Dashboard!
Main Features
📊 Dashboard
Your command center for current vehicle statistics:
- Average Fuel Economy: Shows km/L, km/kWh, MPG, or mi/kWh based on your settings
- Total Spending: Sum of all costs for the selected vehicle
- Cost per Distance: How much you spend per 100km or 100mi
- Quick Add: Tap the + button to add a new entry
Tip: Switch between vehicles using the dropdown at the top of the screen. The app remembers your last selection.
📈 History
View your vehicle's performance over time:
- Three Interactive Charts:
- Fuel Economy trends (monthly average)
- Monthly spending breakdown
- Cost per distance over time
- Entry List: Chronological list of all fuel-ups or charging sessions
- Monthly Aggregation: Data grouped by month for easy analysis
Tip: Swipe left on any entry to delete it. The app automatically recalculates efficiency for remaining entries.
⚙️ Settings
Customize Miles to match your preferences:
- Vehicles: Add, edit, or delete vehicles
- Currency: Choose from multiple currencies (USD, EUR, GBP, and more)
- Distance Units: Kilometers or Miles
- Volume Units: Liters or Gallons (for fuel vehicles)
Tip: The app automatically suggests settings based on your device's region, but you can change them anytime.
How to Add an Entry
- From the Dashboard, tap the + button in the top right
- Select your vehicle (if you have multiple)
- Enter the Date of the fuel-up or charge
- Enter your Current Odometer Reading (must be higher than the last entry)
- Enter the Amount of fuel in liters/gallons or electricity in kWh
- Enter the Cost (optional but recommended for statistics)
- Tap Save
Important: The odometer reading must be greater than your previous entry. The app uses this to calculate fuel efficiency.
Tip: Your first entry for a new vehicle won't show efficiency since there's no previous reading to compare. Efficiency appears starting from the second entry.
Understanding Your Statistics
Fuel Economy Calculation
Miles calculates fuel economy using the formula:
Efficiency = (Current Odometer - Previous Odometer) / Fuel Amount
This gives you:
- km/L or km/kWh: For metric users
- MPG or mi/kWh: For imperial users
Cost Metrics
- Total Cost: Sum of all entry costs
- Cost per 100km/100mi: Average cost to travel 100 units of distance
- Monthly Spending: Costs grouped by month in the History view

Managing Multiple Vehicles
Miles supports tracking multiple vehicles with independent statistics:
Adding More Vehicles
- Go to Settings → Vehicles
- Tap the + button
- Enter vehicle name and type
- Start adding entries for that vehicle
Switching Between Vehicles
Use the dropdown menu at the top of the Dashboard or History screen to switch between vehicles. All statistics update automatically.
Editing or Deleting Vehicles
- Edit: Tap on a vehicle in the Vehicles list to change its name or type
- Delete: Swipe left on a vehicle in the list and tap Delete
Warning: Deleting a vehicle permanently removes all associated entries and cannot be undone.
iCloud Sync
Miles automatically syncs your data across all your Apple devices using iCloud:
How It Works
- All data is encrypted and stored in your personal iCloud account
- Changes sync automatically when you're online
- Works across iPhone, iPad, and Mac (if supported)
- Your data never leaves Apple's ecosystem
Enabling/Disabling iCloud Sync
- Open your device Settings app
- Scroll to Miles in the app list
- Toggle iCloud on or off
Tip: If entries aren't syncing, check that you're signed into iCloud on all devices and have iCloud enabled for Miles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why doesn't my first entry show fuel economy?
A: The first entry has no previous odometer reading to compare against. Fuel economy calculations begin with your second entry.
Q: Can I edit an entry after saving it?
A: Currently, you need to delete the entry and create a new one. Swipe left on the entry in History to delete it.
Q: What happens if I delete an entry?
A: The entry is permanently removed, and fuel economy is automatically recalculated for all remaining entries to ensure accuracy.
Q: Can I track both a gasoline car and an electric car?
A: Yes! Add multiple vehicles and set the appropriate type for each. The app automatically adjusts labels and calculations (L vs kWh, km/L vs km/kWh).
Q: Why can't I enter an odometer reading lower than my last entry?
A: This validation ensures accurate fuel economy calculations. If you need to add an older entry, delete newer entries first, add the old entry, then re-add the newer ones.
Q: How do I export my data?
A: Currently, data export isn't built into the app, but your data is included in iOS device backups. You can restore it if you switch devices.
Q: Does Miles work offline?
A: Yes! All features work completely offline. iCloud sync happens automatically when you're back online.
Q: Can I change my currency or units after adding entries?
A: Yes! All data is stored in kilometers and liters/kWh internally. Changing display units only affects how data is shown, not the underlying values.
Q: How do I back up my data?
A: Your data is automatically backed up through iOS device backups and iCloud sync (if enabled). No manual backup is needed.
Q: What's the difference between fuel and electric vehicle types?
A: Fuel vehicles track liters/gallons and show km/L or MPG. Electric vehicles track kWh and show km/kWh or mi/kWh. The calculations are identical otherwise.
Troubleshooting
Data Not Syncing Between Devices
- Ensure you're signed into the same Apple ID on all devices
- Check that iCloud is enabled for Miles in Settings
- Verify you have an internet connection
- Try force-quitting and reopening the app
Statistics Seem Incorrect
- Verify all odometer readings are entered correctly and in ascending order
- Check that you're using consistent units
- Ensure fuel amounts are positive numbers
- Try deleting and re-adding problematic entries
Can't Add New Entry
- Make sure the odometer reading is higher than your last entry
- Verify all required fields are filled in
- Check that fuel amount and cost are positive numbers
Charts Not Displaying
- You need at least 2-3 entries for meaningful charts
- Ensure your entries have valid dates and values
- Try scrolling to see if data exists in earlier months

🎯 Consistent Tracking
Add an entry every time you fuel up or charge. Consistent data leads to accurate statistics and useful trends.
📏 Accurate Odometer Readings
Double-check your odometer reading before entering. Small errors can significantly affect efficiency calculations.
💰 Include Costs
Even though cost is optional, including it enables all financial statistics and helps you budget effectively.
🔋 Full Tank Entries (Fuel Vehicles)
For most accurate fuel economy, add entries when you fill your tank completely. Partial fills are supported but may affect accuracy.
⚡ Charging Sessions (Electric Vehicles)
For EVs, you can add entries for any charging session, not just full charges. The app calculates efficiency based on actual kWh added.
